THis has turned into quite the argument hasnt it lol. John i agree with the whole catch and release thing and i dont believe ALL released salmon die but there is no doubt and i have seen it that salmon do die, dont matter how quick you reel them in and let them go if the water is to warm and to low the released fish die from what i seen on the river i fish. I do not agree with the people who use there tags up and then continue to catch and release, what happens if they haul in a injured fish? I think fill your tags and that it for the year, but that my 2 cents and i wouldnt push it on anyone. As for the big lure to repel small fish, this does not work, I personally put this to the test with a 6" rapala and i caught more 6-10" trout then i ever have.

The presence of pain in an animal, or another human for that matter, cannot be known for sure, but the possibility that animals experience pain can be inferred through comparative brain physiology and physical and behavioral reactions.[1] Some specialists currently believe that all vertebrates feel pain, and that certain invertebrates, like the octopus, might too.
Animal protection advocates have raised concerns about the possible suffering of fish caused by angling. In light of recent research, some countries, like Switzerland and Spain have banned C&R completely. Germany, has banned specific types of fishing, and the RSPCA (which has authority in England and Wales) now formally prosecutes individuals who are cruel to fish.

In a 2009 paper, Janicke Nordgreen from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Joseph Garner from Purdue University, and others, published research which concluded that goldfish do feel pain, and that their reactions to pain are much like those of humans.
As I sit here in front of my pc compiling facts from all over the world against catch and release it comes to my mind why I didn't want to get into it in the first place .It is all vanity and a striving after wind. Anything which you post I can counteract, and the same goes for what I post . All we are accomplishing here is to bring negative attention to fishing [for any reason.] We are also causing unrest to other members on this site who used to enjoy the simplistic pleasure of enjoying a day outdoors and catching a few fish [for whatever reason].It is quite obvious to me  from my research that the whole world is taking a negative view of any outdoor activity which causes pain to , or takes the life of other living creatures.  This matter has become nothing more than a case  of " ONEUPMANSHIP" between you and I and makes both of us look foolish . Logic dictates that  the best argument in sensitive matters such a this is no argument at all.Logic also dictates that neither my pride or yours is worth the possible consequences.

Shall we continue , or put it to rest .

Very nice pic John. I can tell we are a lot alike in out train of though based on the nice discussion below lol (even the cod casserole). In my area I am talked about and looked down on because I am among a very few who catch and release salmon. They cannot process that I am doing it for the thrill or for sport, they are convinced I must be poaching. They say "how can you let them go? it would break my heart" well it worms mine every time one rips out of my hands once revived. Same goes for troutin catch and release is the way to go!!!! Yes keep a meal everyone loves trout. I will keep a meal when ever I feel like it but they will never see the freezer the same as my salmon, once frozen its the same as I bought it at dominion sure. Everything is good in moderation when it comes to nature its able to look after its self but our population is to high for everyone to limit every time. Everyone says "needs some trout for the winter b'y" I says " go catch a meal the winter b'y"

As I knew it would from the beginning , this just goes on and on.When I wrote the comment to you I spoke of the "inhumane " aspect of C&R and then do to the comments of others on the site I decided to ease off lest fishing become the victim , as I predicted it would in my first comments. You did not address any of the issues  that I raised in that post even though I addressed yours [which were  by the way  very "ill advised" ]and which I made perfectly clear in my rebuttal.I can't believe that you would make such "irresponsible" comments about C&R while trying to justify  it, and then go on to contradict yourself. I will now address your latest comments in favor of C&R
        HERE IS WHAT YOU SAID;
"Ever thought of avoiding hooking the smaller fish by using larger lures? I also never use less then a 10 pound non tapered leader when fly fishing and use the "come or bust" method lol.   its only a fly."

           "Contradiction"

But ...no matter how much the old guard kick and scream and use straw arguments trying to support a dated practice, the vast majority of anglers these days are telling the truth...we are advocating Proper c,n,r techniques..We have moved on into the 21th century, we understand that the wild fish population cant support our population if we all kept the dated limit..we understand changing even our fishing technique.......I would just like to see it catch on a little quicker in the trout fishery island wide. Most anglers have begrudgingly accepted the fact CnR exists in salmon fishing and already to some extent practice it.

If it does catch on heres what it means.

Larger lures require larger hooks either single, double,or even tripple otherwise the are inefective.Consider this, anyone who wants to pick up a casting reel and rod, or fly rod can go fishing any time they choose for as many hours a day as they choose and catch and release, or lose as many fish/salmon as they choose,no restrictions on any of it,largest possible fly  for salmon and most with little or no experience but still are allowed to do so.The larger hook, even single,if it "sets up" its into the head where the eye cavities , the olfactory bulb, and  the brain are located, blinded fish and massive bleeding can and often are the result. If it sets through the jaw  larger lures are for bigger trout ,as you suggested , even that with the larger hook and "come or bust" with stronger lines  [which are indeed the " proper c,n,r techniques that are now being suggested all over the world to promote it] will add considerably to the mortality rate. If the hook is set a little deeper in the jaw the gills are ripped out moreover if the attack by the fish/trout is more aggressive the hook can set deeper into the throat and do damage to the heart which is just below the gills and indeed if you pull hard enough with the stronger line it will "come" ,in fact you could "in theory" pull it's arse out of it's mouth, that is if it doesn't " Bust" then the fish is out there somewhere ON THE BOTTOM " DYING IN AGONY"  but you wouldn't know that would you, that is because you don't fish with scuba gear I guess. " NO JOHN IT IS NOT JUST A FLY,THAT YOU WILL LOSE IT IS A LIVING ,BREATHING ,PAIN FEELING CREATURE IMPALED  ON THAT FLY OR LURE BUT IT'S  "GREAT SPORT " ISN'T IT JOHN. I didn't bother to get into all the internal organs  but never the less how is that for my knowledge of  fish anatomy and what a hook can do to it,and if they were multiple hooks even what might not have been fatal, [stronger line come or bust] certainly would be. There's more.

This uninformed man has indeed researched the "biased " studies done by those who support C&R fishing. The phrases  " Controlled Environment" and "Novice Fisherman" cannot be used  "logically" in the same experiments since the latter cannot be controlled ,and if they were the experiment has been compromised  and therefore the conclusions are inaccurate and the figures in the 90%s are exaggerated. As you said "the survival rate of a retained fish is ZERO by the way)... let me also add that this dead fish can easily be counted , the mathematics cannot be denied, but when you fish all day and keep "nothing" [ your own words, by the way ], do they refuse to get injured, the mortality rate on those even you cannot count.By the way in Europe ,where you say these tests are being carried out isn't it ironic that  "SPAIN" which a major country in "Europe",  C&R has been completely banned " DEEMED INHUMANE" and I don't think that it has moved since this old schooler went to school. One more thing since you mentioned the bag of freezer burned trout, I think it is safe to assume "Logically" that is,that you have found some yourself ,I however have not, mine are gone  before Feb,if in fact I had even enough to last that long, and I don't start trouting until mid June, too cold and not tasty enough. I also stop trouting about two weeks before the season ends ,not good tasting while full of large spawn, but I bet you don't do any of that , just catch ,catch, and catch away. For my part that leaves more trout in the water. I think that is enough for now, but as I said before there are many more comments that I can add, this is merely an example . By the way if the catch and drag technique "stronger lines, come or bust" is 21st. century  fishing logic ,IT IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED.

PS. I was really disappointed that you didn't mention the anatomy of a fish. I really wanted to learn.

Haveing a good time fishing is what it is all about no matter what. Not one person is alike and that is a fact, we all do it the way we see fit to some C&R and some keep. But it is true how many people on the site catch there limit and go home??????

If we did that i think that the population of trout would go of the wall.

Hi peter, I to catch a lot of trout before getting enough for a feed, and I like more than one feed a year. My family is all grown up now and I  don't  need as many as I used to . I also like to have some for the winter.

Fishing for food is not under attack anywhere in the world , since it is the only justifiable reason for it, however C&R is in many parts of the world, including Canada and the US. I am well aware that the  practice of C&R [ for the sake of catch and release }" big trout " cannot be justified by logic since there cannot be an argument based on logic  put forward to support it . After having said all that if we base all our opinions on logic alone in these matters the human condition becomes a victim .Since those who eat fish have been deemed "fish killers" to often here in favour of a method of fishing that has the potential to kill even more I felt this response was necessary. Attacking the only form of fishing that is acceptable in this "TREE HUGGING , ANIMAL RIGHTS  FANATIC " society in which we live is just plain silly. Catch some, eat some, throw some, oops, I mean release some and enjoy the experience.

I have to agree with the boys, I enjoy C & R myself. I find it very relaxing. If your fishing do you keep the very tiny ones, no of course not. You put them back. The leagle limit is 6" so anything smaller is released.

So is this not a form of catch and release?

I enjoy a meal of trout usually once a year. Sometimes while in the process of catching those trout I will be required by law, to release some of the trout due to thier size.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with C & R.

When you have caught your limit and continue to fish what do you do with those that are injured, do you still throw them back or do they refuse to get injured after you have limited out or do you just decide to go over the legal limit and keep them anyway.
