That is exactly what I expected to hear lol. All these things which you mention as a reason are nothing more than an excuse for infliction pain on living creatures in the name of sport.None of these excuses justify this barbaric practice lol .If it were not for those who fish and eat , fishing could not be justified , if it were not for those who hunt for food hunting could not be justified , logically and certainly not morally lol .If you want to do something for sport it would be better to go to the ball field for a game of ball or go  Skateboarding or ride a dirt bike around in circles in a gravel pit, or pick up a camera and hike threw the woods, or play pool or checkers or Chess , go for a ride on Snowmobile or Play a game of hockey with friends on the pond . These things do not inflict pain on living creatures and kills nothing, there is a mortality rate on C & R . Those who catch a limit of fish to take home  know exactly how many fish they have " KILLED "  You however can not lol . FOR SPORT, the fun of hooking a fish is barbaric and the term barbarian is a well deserved  name for those who do it lol.  C&R has been completely banned in Spain citing it as inhumane, no doubt other countries will follow this route. If you catch and release fish all day you could very well be " KILLING " more fish than the limit allowed to be taken by law, and if you don't put on your scuba gear and swim with the fish that you have released you cannot know how many will die lol.

I am sure PETA and others will love to hear these comments , never the less they are here and there are many more that can be added.

FISHING AND HUNTING I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE TO YOU BOTH.

Well john i do walk alot myself to get to the ponds where there are the biggest trout. I have recorded on a GPS one day that i put on 14 K for that day just to get a few trout for supper. The reason why i bring home my limit is that my dad and i love them.I don't just make one trip a year i go every weekend i am home and to different ponds. There are 7 big ponds in that area where i fish and the population of fish is off the wall. Every fish i get is a trophy fish. They are all big and fat. For ex... i only took my limit to eat and could have took the other 150 i put back that where over 1lb. So in a way we are different but much alike.

John ,why do you fish?

John Eel do tast realy good and i have eaten a good few myself. But what i don't agree with is, I walk for 4 mile back in the country to get to a few ponds to only take 2 or 3 trout. Now don't get me wrong ponds that are close to the road yes. Why not have the limit to 2 or 3, to help the population. But for some town's you can't get to alot of ponds by bike you have to hike it in. I myself would not walk for two hours just to bring home 2 or 3 trout. Don't get me wrong i don't go in and fill my bag up with what ever i can catch, i only take the limit. Just my take on it.

I was talking to someone about a week ago who told me eels were delicious I've never eaten them myself  the only ones I ever caught were by accident I couldn't bring myself to touch them just cut the line and let them go , maybe if I see someone cooking one some day I might give them a try. I agree though that if you catch the limit of small trout the egg count could catch and even surpass {depending on the size of small trout caught]  the number of eggs produced by the couple of larger trout kept.

There is one thing that becomes clear in these discussions and that is that there are no perfect solutions to these problems, if in fact they are problems at all , and not a misinterpretation of what we think is happening. It is not an exact science and therefore open to different views. Science needs to become more involved in these very things we are discussing so that our methods become more in tune with what the situation may dictate. The only thing we can go by at present is that each individual govern him/herself by what each thinks they should do. Perhaps the most important thing of all is to enjoy the experience.

Predation, and not so much the size, or the number of small trout retained , is the greater problem since the larger the trout retained the the more eggs are lost and therefore the more trout killed indirectly,so to speak . Since the parr was stripped off the fly by the large trout then perhaps a reduction in the number of large trout via means of retention would increase salmon stocks in that particular area , if in fact these stocks needed to be increased. Not suggesting destroying one to increase the other , but perhaps a way to strike a balance between the two.

Another thought That comes to mind along these lines is the " American Eel " which can grow to quite a length according to some that I have seen and certainly do add considerably to the high mortality rate of trout and salmon. Maybe some serious eel catching needs to take place on our rivers, I don't  think there is much of it being done these days.  Just throwing out some thoughts.

That's the whole point John, if it had not been for the parr this info would have remained hidden which would indicate that this theory of mine has some merit.I don't use a fly but a small red worm on small hook and draw it on top the water like a fly however this is a unique way of trouting and not many outside my family know  how to do it, good thing to it is deadly. I have had many big splashes after the hook and have caught quite a few of them. I usually see every trout that is after the hook, however, back to the topic, since  there are so many people trouting on the Avalon just about everything that can be used has been used but the level of experience in their use may very  well be a factor in the equation.More info is needed but I do believe that we are  heading in the right direction.

A parr is a young salmon.

Here's a stupid question. What is a par?
Comment by John Smallwood on July 13, 2011 at 12:38pm

I fished one place many times and never realized it was a big trout holding area till i had one eat a par off my Fly....switched to casting up river stripping big streamers and drys down fast and caught and released many a big trout there since....they needed something more exciting to trigger a strike as they were there hunting par.
