Isn't  it strange that people on the Avalon are catching small trout and not the whoppers that layed them. You said, " With Salmon egges and  [par] to eat on one end of the river and [shrimp and capelin]  to eat on the other they have to get big with that much feed handy......certianly wouldnt hurt to try and find out . Here's a theory of mine.  In the new area that I just moved to I have found small trout as thick as capelin. It would seem to me that there are indeed big trout on the Avalon but that they are so well fed on small trout that the are much harder to catch and just not interested in taking what we are offering. As Peter said the odd " monster" , so the next monster that is caught I would suggest opening the stomach to see whats in it,  the contents , I think will help to answer some of our questions.

Brown trout just don't taste that great compared to our Brook/mud trout. The last brown trout we caught was about 2 pounds. We cooked it and just didn't enjoy the flavor. So any Browns we catch now we just throw back. We usually have 1 meal of brook/mud trout a year.
However Telly (beagle) thought the Brown Trout was great.

I have to agree John & Peter the shear amount of people on the east coast does reduce the opportunity to increase in size and number. Reducing bag limits is one way to help this, and I totally agree with it.

However there is another reason, one which does not occur on the west coast or even much off the Avalon, That is we have large numbers of Brown Trout! Brown trout are voracious eaters, and our native brook trout/mud trout are being consumed on a tremendous level. In fact, many traditional brook trout streams and Ponds have artificially been altered with the introduction of the Brown Trout. and in many instances the brown trout have extirpated entirely. My thoughts as to how solve this is to lower the bag limits for Brook trout and increase the bag limits for Brown trout. But What is your opinion??

I'm with you on this one John! 1 or 2 2lb trout is plenty for me and my family. If I were to fill a bucket full of small trout they would just end up in the freezer anyway and probably forgot about.

John, do you think the pressure on these trout, are greater toward this end of the island. If you were to measure the population of the avalon compared to the northern, there are many thousands more on this end.

Just the number of people fishing in the 2 areas, would be a drastic difference.

Could this be the reason for the smaller trout, could it be the feed, or  do you think catch and release would solve the problem?

I don't know, I'm only asking and I'm not trying to be smart ass.

The slot limit now is 6 inches. What do you think it should be changed to?

My son and I fish the Waterford River, my son trouts there everyday. We just catch and release and so do most people. Maybe 1 in 500 might keep a trout to eat.

For all the catch and release most of the trout caught are what I would call pan size trout, with the ocasional pounder and the rare monster.

Some of the guys from work, went out to Portland Creek earlier this spring. They has some dandy trout. However a lot of people just can't afford to make a trip to the west coast or to visit a outfitter.

This brook or Mud or whatever we call it is a beautiful fish and we should protect it, if it is in danger.

I honestly don't think I diss-repect our native trout by calling it a mud trout or any other name.

I started fishing about 35 or so years ago, with my dad, mom and Uncle Joe.

Uncle Joe, called them mud trout even when he was on his death bed, as we relived old fishing trips. We caught mostly pan size trout, some bigger most smaller.

Funny part, we didn't care what we caught, we just enjoyed the outdoors, the trout, and the companionship. I think he even enjoyed cussing the flies.

Tried some new ground today and could have filled a barrel with 7-8-9 " trout. Caught one that was just over 12" long and weighed just over 1 lb. He looked pretty fat so I checked his stomach, turns out I was using the wrong bait. I was using worms , but I think he would have preferred shrews or mice he had one in his stomach.

Good point Nicholas! I have to agree limit your catch is the way to go! Many other provinces do indeed have slot limits and it works! And yes, we should stand together, I was trying to just highlight that some retention is okay. If I came off as attacking anyone, my apologies! We have enough people here to make some really great changes that would benefit our fishery, John had some great points as did Albert. I think we can all agree there must be some changes made to ensure that our future fishing can continue. ED

Point #5. The my way is the best way and the only way attitude will always come under fire , but be careful in discussing them ,don't want to feed the "ANTIES"

Well b'ys like to thank you all for the entertainment..lol. Maybe time to limit the amount of attacks on each other makes the sight look bad I think and might intimidate new members. That being said id say 3 way tie for first place in this debate for good points but no one came to any overall conclusion that would fix the problem!!!!!!!  SLOT SIZE LIMIT??????  REDUCE BAG LIMIT a little bit??????? Argument over problem solved period.  Make a slot size of 10-20 inches and reduce bad limit to 8 fish. Wouldn't need 12 fish for a meal if the fish you keep were quality fish.If anyone can catch 12 fish and not go over the 5lbs rule they should not have kept them anyway..PS I think the 5lbs rule stinks set it as a # and leave it alone. Also  I figured this site was a place to stand together and be a voice for hunters and fishers in this province and maybe stand up and get a few things changed for better....Guess I was wrong eh.

It's great to have a point of vew on thing's, but to get upset is not the way to go. To me a trout is a trout, i don't care what people call them it's still a trout.
