So, I picked up my Salmon tags this morning and I'm kinda disappointed in the effort that DFO or whom ever made the tags put into it. It's not a bad idea, but I think they should have came up with a more rugged tag instead of just a piece of paper. As soon as the tag is attached to the salmon it is going to get wet and everyone knows what happens to wet paper. Also, the tags themselves should be color coded like before, not just the color on the paper part of the tag. The numbers and dates that you have to cut out are small and may be hard for some people to read. I know that when I catch my salmon and tag it, I usually like to keep it in the water next to the shore while I keep fishing, but with the new tags this can't happen as the paper would just soak off and float down the river...then you're up shi*t creek if Mr/Mrs. DFO officer happens to show up. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumping on DFO or Spawn or whom ever, they are headed in the right direction with the tags. I just think they could have been crafted a little more durable.Thats my 2 cents worth anyway.... Feel free to rebuttal or comment.

New tags offer double protection.

Salmon anglers will have a new tag this year, one designed in such a way as to deter re-opening and ensure compliance with the daily and seasonal retention limits.

The month and date must be clipped, plus the tag must be locked around the gill section once a salmon is retained. SPAWN had an opportunity to view the tags recently at IFE and the smaller locking opening along with the way it locks will make it extremely difficult for poachers to re-open them. Not only that, but attempts to pull the tags open will reveal a cleverly designed "weakness". No more on that for now...Anyone who tries it will quickly discover the built-in feature.

The only complaint we have is that the months and dates are very small and unless you have 20/20 vision they are difficult to read. From what we can learn, this observation was also made by IFE staff ( Inland Fisheries Enforcement) and it will likely be improved for next year - Good news indeed.

From what we can see, it would be very advisable NOT to carry a retained salmon by the tag. There will be zero tolerance for improperly closed tags and incorrectly clipped dates/months, unless it's clearly evident that it was a genuine error. An open tag is an open tag and an unclipped tag is an unclipped tag!

With opening day of June 1st quickly approaching the licenses should be at dealers very soon. SPAWN feels the new tags will significantly deter abuse and after years of lobbying for improvement we are truly grateful for this Provincial Govt. initiative.
