Brandon "i know it's not safe to do it but thats what you gotta do to get good fishing"

Come on by, don't do something stupid like that. Think about your family. You are taking a very serious risk. We don't want to hear anything bad. You have from May to Augest to trout. 3 feet of water or not, depending on far you have to travel. 3 feet can be deadly!!!

Only way i would ever walk on 3 inches of ice was if it was in my drive way, all that is needed to make that ice unsafe is for the sun to break through the clouds. At least if you have 6-8 inches you can walk the pond comfortably and check other areas.

I was out to a pond by butter pot yesterday and it was 6 to 8 inches, but there are other ponds on the way there that was wide open. I was surprised because we were out to witless bay line on sunday and it was at least 8 inches, maybe more, so I expected it to thicken up some by yesterday.

it was really mild here today and foggy couldnt get up to that spot prob not gonna get another chance after this storm tonight

Just think, if that ice is a bridge across a canyon would you cross it? You're taking the same chance on a pond.

Brandon, if you are going by that site, I think you are going to be very sorry.  I hope not. I wouldn't let my beagle out on 3" of ice. The ice conditions can change in a few short hours. You are playing a very dangerous game. Does it take into account the shock load factor. A 200 pound man falls and hits the ice, that impact is the same as 400 pounds on that piece of ice. If you want to gamble with your life thats up to you. For me when dealing with life and death the bear minimum is not good enough, I can't speak for everyone, but I like to go home at the end of the day.

Cochrane Pond in the Goulds can have 12" of ice at the lower end of the pond [ that is the Goulds side] and off "Higgins Run-in" you can go through it because the pond is being fed by "spring water" in that area.  A heavy axe should be carried for sounding the ice as you walk on it . As for machines, well that might be a good way to get your name on the 6: O ' Clock news. You are right on Tyler , warm air does weaken ice. A few figures written on a piece of paper is one thing , however , the realities of nature , on numerous occasions, has proven the those figures to be wrong, they merely tell you to "AT THE VERY LEAST "  use common sense, and more so , if you don't know the pond you are fishing. I think the idea is to pull the fish out of the water , not to join them in it  lol.

Straight from the article: "it is not reliable for stationary loads. When in doubt, stay off the ice !" How are you supposed to fish if you have to keep moving? Also "If the air temperature stays above freezing for 24 hours or more, the ice begins to lose strength, and the table no longer represents safe conditions."
