Information
All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

if their is three hunters in the boat then your allowed 60 or two hunters 40 one hunter 10 but even if their is four, five or six hunters in the boat their is still only allowed 60 turrs in the boatContinue

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

Curtis you are dead on about the dangers of hidden shoals in this bay. You have to really know what to look for.

Yes Curtis b'y not fit the last day we were out we seen everything dead. There was times we went for a turr when we got there it was just the skin with the breast gone off it.not gonna leave much like that

Its none of my business but people should really look hard at what they're shooting at, last trip out i past three dead bull birds one dead puffin and one crippled puffin i also found two crippled turrs on the way in i had my limit so i had to leave them, stick around for a while if you cover in a turr he may have dove and come up dead takes a long time for them to float up they can dive up to 180m and also some people should look into chart plotters or paper charts with GPS there are alot of dangerous shoals in placentia bay ive seen boats several times cross very bad shoals that only break every now and then, its bad enough 100 boats running around firing off shotguns last thing everyone needs is a search and rescue!

I agree with your take on things Curtis. The problem with enforcement is that this hunt as I understand it comes under Federal Jurisdiction. I don't know of any Federal Enforcement Officers in this province. There used to be but Harper took care of that.

Not very often i get involved with this topic because it is very touchy but i have read alot of stuff on this site and many others and have come to my own conclusion and would like to share, first is the number of birds, im not very old by no means but im sure i have a few more years hunting in placentia bay then a few people in this discussion my first years out at turrs was when i was 12 just about 12 years ago there was an abundance of turrs and very few boats the turrs were around as early as mid october right until march now the turrs are much more scarce compred to then! With a larger number of boats and interest in the sport! I have also worked in the arctic for the last 5 summers on shuttle tankers the amount pf turrs i seen the first year has dropped dramatically from the amount 5 years ago especially on the lab coast however the Amount of bull birds alwasy seems to be the same even increased, moral of the story is the birds are depleating asthe increase in interest of the sport, numbers may still be healthy now but they are depleting! Second thing is wildlife inspections in 12 years iveveen checked once back in december of this year, they wildlife and fisheries were out monitoring the cod fishery seen me and more or less stopped to see what i was at i had one turr that was the first time ive been checked in 12 years and im from placentia bay spend alot of time on the water and checked once. Third thing is sale of turrs, its going on everywhere even though kenneth did the math theres people taking 100's of birds a day not just the limit but 100's so they make profit.
Easy solution reduce bag limit to 10 turrs per license per boat to help with the increase in hunting pressure and have more inspections by wildlife tht will be enough to scare those abusing the system and not make it worth there while to attempt to sell them!

20 each is too much. 10 is iffy but 12 or 15 is not to bad. With a limit of 15 you would save 15 per 3 people per boat. 15 is plenty. Imo

Yes and father often told us they would kill them in the harbour year after year. A flat was the only thing needed. Now you have to drive for miles to even see one.
