Murre (turr) hunters:

All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

They are in just on the left hand side of fox island. Brother killed 7 from the shore in our home town yesterday. He was there for an hr. Not bad. Guess the wind drove them in. But no gas burnt that day.

He is only a member of the rod and gun club. I doubt very much he has any qualifications. Are there people poaching turrs and selling them. Sire there are, just the same as with moose or any other wild game. Some of the people from placentia complaining about people loading their boats and going for more are from placentia. He was selling them for 15 a brace. Another fella complaining about the people going to placentia and hunting turrs, went duck hunting a week before it opened. I take all this with a grain of salt.
Having said that there was a gentleman from CWS 8th placentia taking notes on the number of boats, hunters and the number of turrs taken.
I do have faith in his research. Him and I have discussed the number of turrs taken and if the current harvest is causing damage to the population.
I like yourself would like to see the turr hunt continue. However if the current rate of harvest is unsustainable then the harvest rate must be lowered. Not because a few people from any one area want all the birds for themselves but because it is good for a healthy population of turrs.
For the record, I think the harvest that happened in Placentia Bay was extream. I could be wrong but I'd like to see the bag limit lowered to 12 each per day. That still gives you fresh meat and an enjoyable day on the water.
Remember lowering the bag limit will not effect the poachers, they will still kill as many as they can to sell.
By the way guys this conversation will make it all the way to the CWS. I have to say, it is good to see so many concerned about our wildlife.
Remember this, it is also just as important, where the information comes from and what the information is.
