Murre (turr) hunters:

All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

Got to have one turr per person in front of you. No trouble going through 40 with a crowd coming. This is one of the few privileges we have left and we have to protect the resource.  I remember as many of us do going out in the motor boat with father and there seemed to be a lot more birds then. Technology today has made it easy to harvest  birds. Unfortunately common sense  is not common. I can rant on but I think I make my point.

Don't blame you. People are asking me to sell them all the time. I tell them I can't. A few.close friends and relatives end up with a meal or 2.

18 of us for Sunday dinner and Turr is on the table for supper that's a one man limit right there. I hate the guys that sell them. Let's see $60.00 in gas for the boat, if you have to tow your boat add $80.00 and $100.00 for shells and all day on the water $100.00. I figured about 40 birds for the day if you get 40. To sell a Turr it would have to be sold for $8.50 a bird to break even. You would have to sell them for $10.00 each to make money. But by law you are not sell any game birds. Sorry about the rant.

I agree Aaron. The numbers are good now, but they need protection from people that are steady killing and selling them.
For the record my young fella and.I have eaten 8 or 10 in the last week or so. But those I cut the best and legs off and cooked the hearts and livers. Had 4 stuffed besides that.

Who's going to eat 40 birds in a year? If you can honestly tell me that every bird you kill will be eaten then go ahead and harvest those birds. If not you should only be out for what you can use. I've sadly seen to many birds go into a freezer and then in the garbage. It's time for a change. Go out get your birds that you NEED and stop there. Dont go out and limit out for the sake of bragging rights. I want to hear about "I could have harvested 20 birds but I only needed 6 so we came back in." Let's keep this amazing sport and way of life sustainable. It's on us as hunters to respect that. Sorry bit of a rant but as my first year Turr hunting with very little success and the fact that we have the means to harvest turrs like never before with the low numbers should give us a wake up. Let's not go take everything were allowed, Let's take what we can honestly use.

For as long as we have been on the water we were never checked. 3000 birds in a single day is alot of birds. They only lay one egg a year.

The birds wintering along the south coast come from as far away as the Arctic & Greenland. The population is healthy but everything has its limits. Newfoundlanders are the only ones who have an exemption under the Migratory Game Bird Act to take a total of 40 birds per individual for a season. Any more than that is just plain greed. Unfortunately, there are always those who have the mindset that they will take what they can get. 70 boats taking an average of 40 birds per boat is 2800 birds. That is a conservative figure. I agree that 30 birds per boat is enough. Has anyone been checked?

Funny I was talking to my uncle and he said up of St Mary's there are million of birds. They were pushing them with there boat. But yes 30 per boat is plenty. Let's hope that someone will listen.
