The Department of Natural Resources has issued a public advisory after several reports of coyote sightings on the Powers Pond walking trail in Mount Pearl yesterday.

Conservation officers are monitoring the situation. They say anyone encountering a coyote should never approach or crowd the animal, instead be aggressive, make noise and wave your arms while giving it an escape route. Maintain eye contact and do not run away.

Residents of the area are reminded to properly store and dispose of garbage to avoid attracting wild animals.

Anyone sighting a coyote is asked to contact the Forest Management District Office at 729-4180.

There have been two more reported sightings of a coyote in the area of the popular Powers Pond walking trail in Mount Pearl. The Department of Natural Resources received two reports over the weekend after issuing an advisory to the public about the animal.

A live trap has been set up in the area and wildlife officers will continue to monitor the situation.
