The Provincial Government is looking for your input on the development of a five-year moose management plan for the island. Environment and Conservation has scheduled a series of public meetings starting October 15th at the Sheraton in St John's to discuss how the moose population is currently managed, solicit feedback on future management decisions, and get a better understanding of how the public views the resource. Sessions will also be held in Clarenville, Marystown, L'anse au Clair, Plum Point, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor and Port aux Basques. Interested individuals are asked to pre-register by e-mailing mooseplan@gov.nl.ca

I agree that the moose cannot be blamed for this. People do need to slow down and pay attention while driving especially during the night. Instead of just staring straight ahead look around on the sides of the highway cause this is where the moose is feeding before it comes onto the highway. I do a fair bit of driving during the dark in central and the moose that I do see are far and few these last couple of years. More licenses won't solve the problem only kill off the few moose we have left. I love to hunt and I also want my son to enjoy it when he gets older. More moose fencing and brush cutting is a good thing but awareness is the best way to cut down on accidents.

I think the Moose "Fence" that works on sensors and lights is a fantastic idea...IF it works, no toxins used on the sides of roads and warning for drivers to slow down and pay more attention. i personally belive that more money should be invested into ideas like that where we aren't just exterminating a beautiful animal from our even more beautiful province but we are still protecting the people from accidents. as much as i think we shouldnt need to protect them and that they just need to slow down and learn to pay more attention, and that an accident is just that, an accident. But obviously something needs to be done because people will never learn and are a little ignorant to anything other than themselves. And with alot of these Anti-moose people they actually havent been directly affected by a moose/vehicle collision and are just joining the cause just to say they're part of it because it's something to complain about or talk about. which is the unfortuante result of the way society as a whole is going nowadays.

but back to the topic, i don't think that more licenses need to be handed out and the numbers thinned but i do feel this issue has to be put to bed and something needs to be done. more warning systems that a moose is in the area or maybe more lights on highways or maybe even more enforcement officers on roads and highways and enforce speeding regulations and make people slow down and be more aware of surroundings.

Just my opinion as a relatively new hunter and someone who enjoys the outdorrs and hunting and maybe when my son gets older, be able to take him out hunting and teach him about the outdoors and wildlife and conservation.
