Turr Hunting
Information
All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

if their is three hunters in the boat then your allowed 60 or two hunters 40 one hunter 10 but even if their is four, five or six hunters in the boat their is still only allowed 60 turrs in the boatContinue

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

Bill montavecchi who is a scientist must not understand them either . As he is saying the same thing.I can smell the bird island in witless bay too bu that doesn’t mean turrs are plentiful.My father spent the whole summer on Labrador coast the spring summer and fall . Hardly saw any turrs .

Those who understand the migration of turrs back to the northern arctic islands know that the few birds taken in Placentia Bay is a tiny fraction of the total population. You have to look at the big picture. Grant it, the greed factor is concerning but they are but a few. I had the privilege of visiting Coats Island in Hudson's Bay which is where greater murres nest and believe me it was a sight to behold. You could smell the island miles downwind.

Noah, they are in now. Got 40 just of fox island. Plenty of birds out there. Left 8:30 was back home at 10:00. Don't think that is scarce. But that's plenty of birds for us. Not by the looks of some people Facebook pages with trip after trip. That's only birds ending up in the dump at the start of next years season. Just saying

Imagine that turrs finally getting scarce in Placentia . I wonder why ? 40 or 50 boats out every good day wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Its a wonder it lasted this long.

We were in Placentia Bay in January 25, 2020 and picked up 60 birds. Steamed 64 miles during the day. Birds were scattered. No companies; mostly singles and doubles. Left Jerseyside launch at 7:45 and got back at 4:15.

Few boats had nothing on Saturday, we had 55 but we went in the bay. The birds are scarce there now.

Are there any reports of turrs in Placentia Bay for 2020? We had some big winds and I haven't been out. I did get one positive report but it is third hand.
