ASP Recommends Halting Food Fishery In Light Of Declining Cod Stocks

Posted on April 21, 2018 at 6:14am 0 Comments

The Association of Seafood Producers is calling for an end of the food fishery in light of declining cod stocks.

The ASP made the recommendation as part of its proposal to DFO’s management plan.

Despite the moratorium, the latest science shows that cod stocks have failed to recover from levels they were when the moratorium was imposed over 20 years ago.

Executive Director of the Seafood Producers, Derek Butler says others are on the same page. He says very little is…

In an effort to get more young people out hunting, Newfoundland and Labrador is lowering the minimum age for both small and big game licences.

The new age limits were announced Friday along with other changes to the Wildlife Act and regulations, including efforts to help those with disabilities have better access to hunting and angling.

The minimum age to shoot small game, coyotes and other furbearing animals has been lowered from 16 to 12, and the minimum age to shoot big game…

  1. Thanks Peter. I’m wondering if you know of an indoor or outdoor practice range for bow/arrow. And if you know of the regulations of just picking a place in the countryside for practice?

On May 21, 2018 830 am while walking my dog in Thos Howe area about a km east of Gander I came upon a tan colored animal rolling on its back in the trail. My dog was behind me and didn't see it. The animal detected me and when it looked I saw the cat face and thought it was a lynx that had been reported, but when the animal jumped to its feet and bolted into the woods I saw it has a long tail that would have dragged on the ground except for a curl about a foot back from the tip. My first thought was "whats a young lion doing out here?" The tail and color reminded me of a small lion.  It was without a doubt a young cougar about the size of a mid size dog - 40 - 50 lbs maybe.

Wildlife in Gambo was skepical "If you saw a cougar your'e the first one to see one it this area'. I have looked at pics online and what I saw matched exactly, a young cougar tan color with a dark color long tail. May 21st was a holiday, I reported it to wildlife next day May22 and offered to meet them at Thos Howe and show them exact spot but they declined.

Hi Peter. I am doing some research into a goose hunt for the upcoming fall in the Codroy Valley or some other good local. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get moving on this?
