Salmon rivers closed in central Newfoundland

Low water levels and high water temperatures have forced the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to suspend salmon angling on a number of rivers and brooks in central Newfoundland.

In an announcement made this afternoon, DFO said the closures will take effect on Tuesday one hour after sunset. DFO said the rivers will reopen once conditions improve.

No evidence of breeding

The Newfoundland wolf is believed to have been hunted to extinction on the island since about 1930, but the grey wolf is still found in Labrador.

"Although wolves may occasionally arrive from Labrador, there is no evidence of a breeding population on the island portion of the province," said Friday's news release.

Police will conduct an aerial search this morning for a group of five missing hikers near the East Coast Trail between Bay Bulls and the Goulds. Moose Crash Victim Credits Careful Driving

One of the persons involved in a weekend moose accident credits driving according to the conditions as one of the reasons why nobody in the car was injured.

The car came upon two moose in the middle of the road on the Long Harbour Hill at about 10:30 Saturday night. Wayne says he didnt have any time to avoid the moose, so he concentrated on keeping the vehicle on the road.

Two Arrested for Salmon Poaching

New thermal imaging camera technology is being credited for catching poachers on the west coast. The Department of Justice says a 20-year-old man was arrested on July 7 for illegal netting at the mouth of Little Barachois Brook in Bay St. George. Wildlife and enforcement officers seized an illegal gill net and 13 Atlantic Salmon weighing about 65 pounds. Officers arrested a 41-year-old man from Stephenville Crossing the next day for illegally netting salmon in coastal waters. The man…

Recreational Cod Fishery This Weekend

Management measures are the same as last year, and include daily bag limits of five ground fish, and a boat limit of 15 fish when three or more are fishing. This year's fall fishery will run from September 22nd to Sept. 30.
