Middle Cove Beach is abuzz today, now that the capelin are rolling. Children and parents, fishermen and tourists have all come down to Middle Cove -- some for sport, others just for fun. The Department of Natural Resources has extended the ban on outdoor fires to the island. Outdoor fires for camping or the burning of brush is now banned right across the province due to dry conditions. Government says the ban won't be lifted until conditions improve.

First it was coyotes, then the possibility of wolves arriving on the island, now the Department of Natural Resources confirms that it has received a report of a possible cougar sighting on the south coast. A department spokesperson tells VOCM News that while Conservation Officers were not able to confirm the sighting, they did receive a report of a cougar from a resident of Conne River on Monday. The sighting is under investigation, and no other calls have been received.

The New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources is looking into the possibility that a wolf shot in the province last month might have been held in captivity, maybe even as a pet.
"We are not sure on that 100 per cent for sure, but we have DNR staff working on that,” Minister Bruce Northrup told CBC News on Wednesday.
