DNA Results Expected by End of the Month

It'll be the end of the month before results of DNA testing performed on the remains of what was believed to be a coyote, shot on the Bonavista Peninsula last month, will be available. A spokesperson with the Department of Environment says the samples were sent outside the province for testing. The animal, shot by Joe Fleming, weighed in at 82 pounds, double the size of an average large coyote. The animal's appearance has also lead to speculation that it could be some kind of hybrid.…

Retired federal fisheries officer says provincial enforcement abuses authority.

A retired federal fisheries officer is taking the Department of Justice to task over what he calls instances of improper conduct by fish and wildlife enforcement officers.

In a letter to The Telegram, Richard Didham referenced a variety of incidents in recent years where he believes officers were either heavy-handed in applying authority or acted inappropriately in attempts to carry out…

Oromocto NB residents warned after coyote attacks

Oromocto town officials are warning residents to be aware of coyote after reports of three recent attacks on small dogs.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating the attacks but staff have not been able to spot the animals.

While the three small dogs who were victims of the coyote attacks survived, the town’s mayor is still warning pet owners to protect their animals.

"Maybe our problem is that people are leaving food out around their homes for their…

Still no definitive cause for moose deaths

People throughout areas on the Northern Peninsula have been reporting cases of sick and dying moose for about a decade now.

Despite an ongoing project partnered by the provincial Departments of Natural Resources, Animal Health and the Department of Environment and Conservation to examine the issue, government has no definitive answers as to a cause, a spokesperson said Friday.

In 2008, the Department of Environment and Conservation released a statement saying people…

Ducks Unlimited Auction!!!

I had a chance to attend the Ducks Unlimited auction here in Corner Brook last week. What a great turnout. Came out of it with a new semi-auto 22 and a gun cabinet. Great cause and very well organized. If you have a chance to take part in any of their events in your area please do so. It is well worth it.

Just got back last week from hunting in Terra Nova Park!!! It was very memorable. We shot a 12 point bull on the last day of the hunt, 1000lb on the hoof. Got to say, it was a great experiance to hunt in the National Park. The park staff were awsom, and i would do it again

Ducks Poison Local Ponds

It seems hunters are saying the numbers of ducks are down this year from other years. Hunters from all areas of the island portion of the province are having the same experience. " Numbers are down". Down from where you ask? Down from the wild, not the heavy populated metro areas. St. John's, Mount Pearl, Paradice and CBS are full of waterfowl. Almost every pothole that has water in it, has ducks. Not 2 or 3 but by the hundreds. Bowring Park, Quida Vida Lake, Waterford River and the list…

Bill to end long-gun registry will destroy data already collected

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper has acted to kill any attempt by a provincial or future federal government to recreate the doomed long-gun registry.

In a surprise move aimed at putting a bullet in the registry for good, the Conservative government bill tabled Wednesday orders the commissioner of firearms to destroy “as soon as feasible” records related to 7.1 million long-barreled guns collected over the past…
