Facts and Myths
Beagles have been used for hunting in Newfoundland and other areas for decades and have commonly been called “hunting” or “rabbit” dogs. Because these dogs have been associated with outdoor sport for generations, it has lead to the opinion that beagles, and hounds in general, should be kept as “outdoor” dogs requiring minimal care and little human…

After going moose hunting with Parsons Pond Outfitters in Newfoundland, I thought I'd provide my feedback. I read brochures and asked many questions of many outfitters before deciding on Parsons Pond, but was unfortunately disappointed.
Brochure advertised separate bedrooms and showers, but were put in the common room and there was no shower at all. This wouldn't have been an issue if it wasn't for being put less than a metre from the wood…

I only just joined this site recently and enjoy it thoroughly. This is the first blog I've ever written, but here I go. When I first joined, Albert Linegar invited me to join the NFHA. Well after looking around this site and then looking around the NFHA site, I thought I would have to be a fool not to join. So I printed off a few membership applications at work Friday afternoon. When I got home from work I bumped into 3 of my friends. I told them about the discounts I was soon to be…

Final summations will be made at the end of next month at the moose-vehicle accidents class-action lawsuit. The trial ran for about three weeks at Supreme Court in St. John's. The lawsuit involves 135 plaintiffs, including at least 15 estates of those killed in collisions since 2001. The lawsuit argues the province never came up with a clear prevention policy but the government says its prevention efforts include roadside brush clearing and warning devices.

Compassion trumped a hunting instinct after a bull moose, which was found in distress on the Port au Port Peninsula last weekend, was rescued.
Several men from the Piccadilly area found the animal which had become wedged in a drainage ditch that was covered with snow, and was unable to get out.
Raymond Barter said when they found the moose, they weren't…

A group of Innu hunters from the Quebec North Shore were recently prevented from illegally hunting the threatened Mealy Mountains caribou herd in Labrador, according to a source.
The 10 or so hunters were headed to the Birchy Lakes area, about 150 kilometres away from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, when wildlife officers stopped them.
The incident happened earlier this month.

For those Hunters who would like hunt for Caribou on the Island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador, Iam upset with the Licence shareing. For instance; are 61 has a quota of 70 Lic. 39 of those go to Non Residents, Are 62, Quota 90, 49 Lic. allocated to Non Residents, area 64, 140 Lic Quota 61 Lic. to Non residents. The list goes on. Why do the Local hunter have to be the ones looseing out. Yes the overall picture is that the locals are getting more lic. than Non Residents,…

Wildlife officers have confirmed two polar bear sightings in the St. Anthony area. A snow plow struck one of the animals on the highway near Raleigh yesterday. The district manager with the Department of Natural Resources, George Gibbons, says they found the animal, tracked it for some distance and determined that it did not appear to be hurt. Gibbons says the worst part of having polar bears in the area is the instinct that people have to seek it out to have a look. Gibbons says…

The Department of Natural Resources has issued a public advisory after several reports of coyote sightings on the Powers Pond walking trail in Mount Pearl yesterday.
Conservation officers are monitoring the situation. They say anyone encountering a coyote should never approach or crowd the animal, instead be aggressive, make noise and wave your arms while giving it an escape route. Maintain eye contact and do not run away.
Residents of the area are reminded to…

I was talking to a good friend of mine the other day. He was telling me, appearently moose are being killed and left to rotten in around the Goulds. I don't know for sure if this is happening, as of now it is hear say. Has anyone else heard anything of this nature, from anywhere else on the island? If this is true, it is very very sad and needs to be stopped and reported immediately.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is about to rehire more than two dozen fish and wildlife enforcement officers.
Justice Minister Darin King said most of the jobs will likely be filled by the same people who were laid off when the provincial budget was brought down in March.
Twenty-five people will be rehired to permanently fill vacant positions.
"They're the ones that are getting priority," said King.
"Just this week, I…

OUR MEMBERS NEED TO ASK GOVERMENT ABOUT THIS AND TO BRING A HALT TO IT UNTIL EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT IT. ONCE THE WILDLIFE AND ENVIORMENT ARE GONE THERE IS NO GETTING IT BACK
